It is impossible to predict how anyone will react in such an extreme event as an active threat situation, but knowing your options can increase your chances of survival. Due to the unpredictable and quickly evolving nature of active threat emergencies, your response will be unique to where you are located, the resources available to you, and your personal abilities.
While the probability of an active threat situation occurring on campus is low, the impact is extremely high- making preparation critical for mitigating the effects of an incident, should one occur. To help you and our community better prepare for the possibility of such an event, we encourage you to watch the video. The video is a dramatization of an active shooter situation on the UIC campus, performed by UIC students, that provides training on how to react in such a crisis.
This video contains themes of violence, and includes audio and visual representation of firearms; some viewers may find the content disturbing. We recommend watching this video with another person, or with a group, to facilitate discussion and support.

Active Threat/Shooter in Your Building
- If you are in an open area or otherwise unsecured space, immediately move yourself and all others into an area that can be secured.
- If you are unable to move inside to an area that can be secured, do your best to hide.
- Barricade the room and lockdown.

Lockdown
- Close and lock the door behind you, if possible. If the door is unable to be locked, barricade the doorway with heavy, solid objects (e.g., desks, tables, cabinets).
- Place yourself and others in the room behind a solid object away from the interior door. Keep others calm and quiet.
- Close any blinds facing the interior space and turn off lights and computer monitors.
- Place mobile phones on silent, but monitor them for UIC ALERT Emergency Notification System (ENS) updates.
- If safe to do so, call the UIC Police Department to provide certain pertinent information (i.e., your building address).
- Should a fire alarm go off in your building while the incident is in progress and the “all clear” has NOT been given, DO NOT EVACUATE a secure space unless you observe evidence of fire or smoke.
- DO NOT attempt to negotiate with the active threat/shooter.
- DO NOT open the door until a KNOWN law enforcement officer advises it is safe to do so, or other credible information is received advising the threat is over (i.e., UIC ALERT).

Active Threat/Shooter Not in Your Building
If you receive notification that there is someone with a weapon on your campus, but not in your building, immediately move inside to the nearest room that would conceal your location from the attacker(s).
- If notified of a threat on your campus, but not in your building, immediately move indoors to the nearest room that would conceal your location.
- Barricade the room and LOCKDOWN
